Library Mission

Maryville College is a diverse community of learning that is committed to effective teaching.  The college strives to stimulate purposeful inquiry and to encourage analytical thinking so that students may grow in academic competence and enjoy the liberating impact of a well-rounded, rigorous liberal arts education.

In its commitment to service, the Lamar Memorial Library, also known as Department of Information Resources & Services, is central to the mission and education goals of the institution.

In coordination with other academic support units on campus, the library provides services that support the college's rigorous curriculum in General Education, the Humanities, the Sciences, the Arts, and in professional fields of study.  In support of the institutional service mission, the library reaches out to the wider community by extending selected library services and by hosting cultural events.

In cooperation with the faculty and with technology support units on campus, the library builds, maintains, and provides convenient access to a carefully selected collection that reflects a diversity of viewpoints and modes of inquiry.  The collection is essential to the success of the curriculum, stimulates intellectual curiosity, and encourages recreational reading.  In addition, the library provides access to materials housed elsewhere and to a wide variety of online resources and networked information.

Together with faculty, librarians design and deliver instructional programs that develop competency in students to retrieve and synthesize information in all formats and that help students develop skills for completing independent research of for life-long learning.

In a world of networked information, the library remains committed to providing a physical space that is inviting and user-oriented and that accommodates individual study, collaborative learning, and the building of a community of learning.

The library maintains a highly qualified staff that is responsive to individual needs and committed to the highest standards of quality in librarianship and information services.
