Counselor

When it comes to counseling, people seem to get confused by what  the term really means.  A counselor is someone who helps a person with problems whether they deal with the person, their home or environment.  There are different types of counselors that deal with different areas of a person's life.  There are educational counselors, rehabilitation counselors, mental health counselors, and those counselors who help people in making decisions about jobs.  Those who decide to go into counseling don't do it for the money.  They do it because it's a job they enjoy doing.  The annual earnings for 1998 are as follows:

                   the median -$38,650

                   the middle 50% -$28,400 to $49,960

                   the highest 10% -$73,920

Those counselors that  are self-employed or may work with law firms and

insurance company's earn the highest amount.

The  educational background of a counselor may vary depending on what field of work they may desire to go into.  Many states require counselor credentialing, certification, licensure or otherwise for practice outside the school system.  Within the school system, a counselor would need a state school counseling certification.

The future for a counselor is very good because there is always a means for advancement.  Counselors may go from working for a school or company to doing research or becoming an administrator.  Counseling will be needed in the future for many reasons in the advancement of society.
