Viet Nam - Then and Now
This page contains photographic images from my first stay in Viet Nam. I was stationed at Long Binh, Republic of South Viet Nam, from June, 1970 to April 1971 where I served as a clerk in US Army Viet Nam Headquarters Vietnam [USARV]. Following basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, I attended the Defense Language Institute in El Paso, Texas for ten months during which time I took the 32 week VietNamese language course. I was officially a translator and was supposed to be sent to Ft. Belvoir to be trained as an interrogator with my language skills but I received my orders to go overseas before I was sent for more training. I served in enlisted combat assignments at Long Binh. During my stay I took several trips around South Viet Nam and visited my former classmates in language school. I traveled to Nha Trang on the coast north of Saigon, to Vung Tau, and the city of Saigon itself. These sets of images come from those experiences. I hope they give you a flavor of war-time South Viet Nam.
