Jerusalem
Israel/Palestine/Jordan
"Living Stones"
|
In the summer of 1996 I had the opportunity to travel to
Israel, Palestine, and Jordan with a group sponsored by the Presbyterian Church
(USA). The trip was called "Living Stones" because it was
designed to enable us to meet with the people of the area, not just to see
ancient remains from biblical times.
Purpose:
- Visit the land of the Bible and holy sites of Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam -- grow in appreciation for these ancient
traditions.
- Meet the people of the land -- gain a deeper
understanding of current issues and conflicts in the area.
Itinerary:
- Because it is a holy city for the three major religions
of the region and is the center of much current controversy, Jerusalem was
an important focal point of the trip.
- Other places of particular interest included Bethlehem;
Jericho, Qumran, and the Dead Sea;
Nazareth, the Sea of
Galilee, and the Jordan River; and in Jordan,
Mt. Nebo, and Madaba.
- As part of our exploration of contemporary
issues, we visited an Israeli settlement, a Palestinian refugee camp and a West Bank Palestinian
village, as well as representatives of the three major religious
traditions.
