Teaching

My overall approach to teaching is shaped by my experience as a learner.  Throughout my
academic career, I have found great excitement in the discovery of new ways of understanding and
thinking about information and issues.  Thus, I try to stimulate students to examine their
assumptions, recognize different approaches to material and ideas, and reflect critically on their
own thinking.  In order to do this I try to select content that is challenging, use exercises that engage
students in analytical reading, writing, and discussion, and provide a setting that encourages
students to explore but is supportive and non-threatening.

Some of my most important learning experiences have involved traveling.   Trips to Israel/Palestine and Turkey have been particularly meaningful.  To view pictures of these places and for information on opportunities for travel study, see the Jerusalem and Turkey pages.
