Teacher Licensure Program

Maryville College is an undergraduate liberal arts institution that places a high value on general education and undergraduate research. Teacher education has been a historical part of the Maryville College mission since its founding in 1819, hence the Maryville College Teacher Education Program finds its mission in the historical roots of the College. The Mission Statement, which was approved by the Teacher Education Advisory Council in 2003, is a revision of the 1993 Mission Statement.

Maryville College Teacher Education Program Mission Statement

The Maryville College faculty and administration believe that the teacher education program should provide students with the skills, dispositions, and knowledge needed to be successful first-year teachers. Our coordinated efforts are dedicated to providing a teacher education program that will develop teachers who demonstrate:

  • The influence of a broad liberal arts education;
  • The ability to solve the many theoretical, practical and ethical problems associated with who to teach, what to teach and how to teach;
  • An understanding of the learning process, and the skills to design instruction appropriate for diverse student populations;
  • The skills needed to analyze and implement the instructional process;
  • The ability to effectively integrate technology into the instructional process;
  • A commitment to personal and professional growth.

Maryville College has a long and proud tradition of preparing teachers who demonstrate and promote excellence in teaching and learning. We continue to support that tradition.

Not only is the Mission Statement true to the historical roots of the College, it is also written to be consistent with the national and state standards for teacher education as developed by INTASC, NCATE and the Tennessee State Board of Education. The faculty in the Maryville College Teacher Education Program work for the reputation of exceeding national and state standards rather than using its private status to circumvent such standards.
