Sheri Matascik, Associate Professor of Music
Sheri Matascik teaches music composition, theory and aural skills, general education courses, and tai chi. She also previously served as interim Chair of the Fine Arts Division for two years and coordinated the Music Program for six years. Her areas of specialization are music theory pedagogy and electronic music composition.

She studied composition with James Waters, Thomas Janson and Joseph Dubiel, a student of Milton Babbitt. She studied electronic composition with Edward J. Largent and Frank Wiley, and has had the opportunity to work with a number of historically important analog synthesizers, including the ARP 2000, Moog, and Buchla.
Sheri Matascik was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award in 1991. Her PhD dissertation includes a composition for chamber ensemble, based on the Wallace Stevens poem, “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” and a theory study entitled, “Aural Skills Pedagogy in American Music Theory Texts, 1900-1930.”
Recent compositions include works for solo instruments, small ensembles, and synthesizer. Her compositional focus is currently on writing for solo guitar.

Larry Smithee, Associate Professor
Larry Smithee has six years experience teaching in public secondary school and 21-years experience teaching college. For four years, Larry was a member of the United States Air Force Band in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was Artist in Residence for three years at Mississippi County Community College in Arkansas. From 1972 to 1974, he toured with the R&B group Louisiana Purchase.
Larry's principal instrument is trumpet. His hobbies include summer sailing with family members off the coast of Virginia and reading.

Bill Swann, Assistant Professor
Bill Swann's areas of specialty are music theory pedagogy and jazz improvisation. He regularly performs as a freelance jazz musician and with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra. He frequently travels to Nashville to do session work. His musical interests include songwriting, ethnomusicology, composition, music technology, and the science of music.

Burt L. Rosevear,
Instructor of Music
Music Resources Coordinator
Burt L Rosevear teaches applied Voice, Vocal Literature and Introduction to the Fine Arts. In addition, he oversees the Music Library, concert recordings and the department’s equipment and computer resources.
A bass-baritone, Burt performs regularly with the Knoxville Opera Company where he has appeared as Il Notaro in Gianni Schicchi, Ein Cappadocian in Solome, Un Carceriere in Tosca, Bob Beckett in HMS Pinafore, and Count Ceprano in Rigoletto.
Throughout his 24 year teaching career Burt has demonstrated success in the development of strong performers and educators. He is proud to be listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 4th Edition.
Mr. Rosevear holds the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from George Fox University, the Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Northern Colorado, and has done extensive doctoral studies in Vocal Performance, Pedagogy and Opera.

Stacey Wilner,
Instructor or Music
Coordinator of Choral Music
Stacey Murphy Wilner is currently in her fifth year serving as the conductor of the Maryville College Concert Choir, Maryville College Community Chorus. Prior to joining the faculty at Maryville College, Stacey was an Assistant Professor of Music at Pellissippi State in Knoxville, TN where she served as Choral Director and Music Coordinator. Previously, Stacey served as choral director in public schools in Tennessee and West Virginia.
In addition to working as choral director, Stacey has served as a choral clinician and judge for Ovation Festivals and Performing Arts Festivals in New York City, New Orleans, Williamsburg, Nashville, Gatlinburg and Myrtle Beach.
Professionally, Stacey has a master of music degree in choral conducting from the University of Tennessee and a bachelor of music education from Concord College. She has served on the board of the Tennessee Music Educators Association, the East Tennessee Vocal Association, and currently completed a term as president of the TN chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. She is also known for her work with the Tennessee Coalition of the Music Educators Association in promoting music and the arts in public education. In her spare time, she enjoys genealogy research, yoga, biking and riding horses. She & her husband Kevin share their home with five dogs, two frogs, two horses and one parrotlet.
