Internal Recommendations From the SACS Review Library Committee

• Physical Facility
  • The Committee recommends that the College create adequate physical facilities to house, service, and make library collections easily available.

• Access to Materials and Collections
  • The Committee recommends that the College build its library collection to better support the educational, research, and public service programs of the institution.
  • The Committee recommends that the College allocate significantly greater resources toward improving the adequacy of learning materials in the library.

Goals for the Library in the Window of Opportunity Strategic Plan 

• The percentage of the College budget devoted to Educational & General Expenses for instruction and library will exceed the mean percentage for our peer institutions that maintain active chapters of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

• The Alexander Center for Community at Maryville College will be established.  Note:  As part of this endeavor, the Alexander Papers will be deposited in the library.

• Academic programs, co-curricular activities and administrative operations will thrive in first-rate facilities for teaching, library services, campus residence and others.

• The College will implement a master plan for technology infrastructure to fully support instruction, administration, and communication.

Recommendations for Future Directions

Programs and services of the library are in excellent shape.  Users generally are quite   satisfied  with the services and moderately satisfied with the resources the library provides.  Staffing levels are adequate for the services the library currently offers.  The poor condition of the facility and the less-than-adequate fiscal support for collections must be addressed.  By supporting the library in the following areas, the college can realize to its fullest potential the library's contributions to the excellence of the institution.

• Further expansion of the information literacy program
• Utilization of library for retention efforts by making it a place that is comfortable for students to use
• Collaboration and pooling of resources with the Learning Center
• Strengthening the library's potential for community building
• Involving librarians in the planning for the Alexander Center
• Maintaining a minimum of current library staffing levels.
